Julian was born in Colombia, South America to James and Liliam Guzman. His grandmother migrated to the U.S. in the early 70s, and years later were joined by his parents. In 1999 the Guzman family moved to Gastonia NC in search of a better future.
Julian's family has been involved in the Coffee industry, like many other Colombian families, in one way or another for the past 4 generations. From farming and processing, to agricultural engineering and cafe managing, coffee has always been a part of his life.
After finishing high school, Julian joined the Marine Corps in 2006 and the following year deployed in support of the Global War on Terrorism and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He re-deployed again in 2008-2009 to Al-Anbar province and again in 2010 while in-route to a training mission in Africa, his unit was diverted to the Haiti following the that country's devastating earthquake as part of Operation Unified Response.
